My life as a traveller

My life as a traveller

Travelling has been a part of my life since I was very little.  My family is spread all over Mexico, so my mom and I used to visit our relatives every time we could. We would also go to the beach every now and then, some times for a few days and some others, just for day trips.

Every couple of years, we’d go on vacation somewhere new, inside the country. On the other hand, my mom has always travelled a lot for work so I knew from a very short age that I wanted to travel as much as I could.

Four years ago, I moved to Mexico City to start my bachelor in Geography and along came field trips.  Every semester we have at least two excursions to the countryside or to smaller cities, as well as some short trips to Geography conferences and meetings. We even travelled to Guatemala!

That gave me the opportunity to visit new places in Mexico that I had never heard of, to realise how amazing it is to travel with your friends, to learn from every trip I make, no matter how short it is and to appreciate and respect even more other people and other ways of living.

In the last few years, I’ve been able to travel abroad four times. The first time I left Mexico, I went with my classmates and some professors to Guatemala and it was one of the most amazing experiences I’ve ever had. The second time, I went to New Orleans with my mom (check out my post about it!).  And the last couple of times I’ve travelled abroad, I have been to Europe, specifically to Spain (2016) and mostly Germany (currently).

This year, I got the chance to spend a semester abroad in Hamburg, Germany. I have to be honest: At first, I wasn’t so excited about it, mainly because until last August I could not speak a single word in German and also, but just a bit, because of the bad weather Hamburg is famous for. In addition, I was quite scared that I wouldn’t succeed living on my own and studying in English and I was sure I would feel lonely as fuck without my friends and family.

Nevertheless, I knew in my heart that this was an opportunity I had to take in order to be able to live with myself. So, I managed to handle my doubts and fears, I started learning German, got everything ready and here I am, starting my third month in Hamburg and absolutely loving it!

I can’t say it has been easy because it hasn’t. It took me a while (and a lot of courage) to get used to being so far away from everything I have ever known and to accept that this experience will turn me (is turning me) into a different person. Because travelling changes people, specially if they are doing it alone and that is how it should be, but sometimes it’s a hard fact to handle.

In spite of that, I am glad I came. One of the biggest advantages of living in Europe is that everything is so close from everywhere, so it’s really easy to travel to new places. So far, I’ve been to Timisoara (Romania), Berlin, Potsdam, Lüneburg (all in Germany) and Paris. But those stories belong to another post.

This is it for now. I hope you’ve enjoyed my post. Look forward for the next one. 🙂
